The Phoenix, in the form of stone, guarded the entrance to the Phoenix Cave where the Chalice of Zeus was kept. When Hercules, Iolaus, and Jason stole the Chalice the Phoenix was awakened. It pursued them to Cheiron's Academy where it tried to carry off Iolaus. Hercules was able to rescue Iolaus but was himself carried off by the Phoenix ("The Treasure of Zeus: Part 1").
Hanging below the Phoenix, Hercules was able to flip himself on to the creature's back. He broke off one of the phoenix's horns and stabbed it into the Phoenix. This caused the creature to explode. Hercules fell to Earth and landed in a wagon full of hay at the Academy ("Between Friends: The Treasure of Zeus, Part 2").
